Actually, they keep using these two words just like this all the time. Rein one and the same Liedtext they use "at a lesson" and "hinein class" and my students are quite confused about it.

In most cases, and indeed hinein this particular example in isolation, "skiing" sounds best, but "to ski" is used when you wish to differentiate skiing from some other activity, even if the action isn't thwarted, and especially rein a parallel construction:
